Review: Gateway T-6321

27 07 2008

Montevina notebooks are popping out everywhere and that means there are deals to be had on Intel’s previous platform; Santa Rosa. This is great news for value-centric consumers.

Gateway has been on a roll since being acquired by Acer last year. Acer’s aggressive pricing for decent specifications combined with Gateway’s newfound sense of style makes the $599 Gateway T-6321 a notebook of interest.

Hardware Highlights:

  • 14.1″ WXGA High-Definition Display With 1280 x 800 Resolution
  • 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
  • 3 GB DDR2 System Memory
  • LabelFlash Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support

Upcoming Reviews

11 07 2008

I’ll be freelancing for the Tech Report now and I have a couple reviews in the works that should be posted in the next few weeks:

Both are pretty cool. The Lambo should be an interesting contrast to the Acer Ferrari ( a line that appears to be abandoned by Acer). At the other end of the spectrum the budget sub-notebook category that Asus invented, and that no one has yet perfected IMO, is seeing an influx of new arrivals from lots of manufacturers. Acer’s entry looks to be the most promising of the lot - on paper.

Cloudbook Teardown

27 02 2008

I just saw this on engadget.

If you’ve wondered what the inside of VIA’s UMPC platform would look like, wonder no more. A nice alternative to the EEE, but how fast is it?

More On the Japanese MacBook Air Teardown

22 02 2008

I contacted Phil Keys - the North American correspondent for Tech-On! the pub that posted the article - to see if I could get an interview with the engineers who were quoted in the piece. It seemed to me, a bit of sour grapes. There are legit criticisms that the MacBook Air deserves, but questioning its design, and internal construction in particular suggests an agenda. Japanese Notebook Engineers Explain Why They Fail

21 02 2008

I read this today on CNet’s Crave blog, and I am at a total loss. I have to wonder if it isn’t just a prank.

In what will likely go down as one of the most stunning public admissions of failure, an un-named group of Japanese notebook engineers offer their opinions of the Apple MacBook Air. In the article, the engineers rip apart a sample and critique the design and construction of the MacBook Air. The revelations are stunning, and I don’t mean the guts of the MacBook Air either.

HP Announces EEE Competitor

20 02 2008

Hmmm… There seems to be a trend emerging here. I guess Asus proved the market for small notebooks exists, and now lots of competitors are rushing to show they can do it better.

HP is the latest to join in on the fracas.

Kohjinsha Launching an EEE PC Competitor in February

18 02 2008

Kohjinsha is a Korean manufacturer of ulta-light convertible style tablet PCs. Although their products do not seem to be carried by any North American distributors there are a few sellers on eBay that seem to sell a steady number of units. I have been tempted to buy one on a few occasions.

Their latest effort (E8) is designed to compete with the Asus EEE.

It’s ‘new’ but it seems to be a Kohjinsha SA5 with a lower price tag.

There were a several things that I did not like about the 2G EEE that I reviewed a while ago. Maybe this device will get the formula right.

It’s a bit short on details, and an open case money shot would be appreciated, but the first review of this beast has been posted on Extremetech.

Gateway 6831FX Slideshow

I was a bit late getting images posted. EEE review images to follow (and probably some images sets for older reviews as well).

WSJ Previews Lenovo ThinkPad X300

13 02 2008

Walt Mossberg gets all the coolest toys - a fair reward for covering technology for as long and as well as he has.

Today he posts a teaser for the X300, something that ThinkPad fans are anxiously awaiting.

What is not to love? All the features of a full sized notebook, in a package that is only marginally bigger than the MacBook Air. Click the link to read more.
