Is It Still Cool to Slam Packard Bell?

28 09 2008

Because I have a serious crush on their version of Gateway’s P-7811FX gaming notebook.

As you probably know, Gateway and Packard Bell were consumed by Acer a few years back. Packard Bell had been languishing under the rudderless NEC Corporation - a company that can not decide what exactly it does from one day to the next. I really expected Packard Bell to go the way of Commodore - a curious footnote in the PC history books like Wang and Olivetti.

But Acer has big plans for Packard Bell - its going to be the hip brand in Europe. Wow. Can this be done? Is it a sign of insanity to even attempt this? You could easily answer yes to either of these questions - but I like how Acer has started.

Delivering gaming products through the Packard Bell iPower line is a good idea. These computers are essentially identical to the well received FX series from Gateway. The FX series really put Gateway back on the map.

This is marketing 101 - get the ‘influencers’ interested in your brand and saying good things about it. That is exactly what has occurred in North America. Gateway’s FX notebooks routinely sell out at Best Buy because they offer terrific performance at a fraction of the competition’s price. Even if you thumb your nose at the brand, you can’t say anything bad about the specifications delivered for the price. The success of the Gateway P-6831fx, P-6860fx and P-7811fx prove this.

Acer’s buying power easily trumps whatever goodwill and gamer cred Alienware and Voodoo have earned for their owners (Dell and HP). Now they will put this to work in Europe.

And boy are the Europeans ever lucky. Look at the specs delivered for 1400 Euros:

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100 processor (as opposed to the 7811fx Core 2 Duo P8400)
  • NVIDIA 9800m GTS 1GB  (double the 7811fx vram)
  • 17″ 1,920 x 1,200 resolution display (the extra ram will help run games at this resolution)
  • Optional Blu-Ray drive (meh - IMO B-R is a waste of money)

I’ll be leaning on my family in Europe to send me one when this notebook launches in October.

Updated Gateway P-6831FX Benchmarks

29 04 2008

Installing the new CPU was quick and painless. Here is a break-down of the upgrades, cost and time:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X7900 - $400 shipped (+$10 for thermal compound) - about 15 minutes to install. This CPU is recognized by the BIOS and over clocking is enabled (from 2.8 GHz to 3.0 - not much, but free).

Storage: Western Digital 250 GB, 5400 RPM HDD - $120 local - 5 minutes to install and setup RAID 0.

OS: Vista Home Premium x64 - $0 (the OEM serial works for 32 or 64 bit) - 60 minutes to install and configure, another 60 minutes to copy over files.

Memory: Crucial 2 GB DDRII-667 - $40 local - 5 minutes to install. Read the rest of this entry »

Coming Up: Upgraded Gateway P-6831FX Update

23 04 2008

Assassin’s Creed Director’s Cut and Grand Turismo 5: Prologue have been eating my time lately.

I’ll be updating the P-6831FX review. It’s been outfitted with 4 GB Ram, 500 GB RAID 0 and an Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme Mobile CPU (X7900). That should allow us to hit the Geforce 8800m’s performance ceiling.

I normally cycle through notebooks pretty fast, but the Gateway is a keeper.

Gateway P6831 FX Wallpaper - Gears of War

9 04 2008

Playing through Gears of War on the PC inspired me to whip up a wallpaper. It is 1920*1200 resolution and free, so you get what you pay for. Enjoy.

I also read a few previews of Fallout 3 that I liked, so here are some wallpapers based on that too.

Hacking the Gateway FX Series

9 03 2008

These notebooks perform great right out of the box, but some people are never satisfied. Lucky for them, the FX series is an inviting platform for notebook enthusiasts.

On the NBR forums there are a few threads discussing the various hacks, mods and upgrades people are performing on their FXs.

Here is just a sampling:

  • Replace the screen with something better. The stock screen on the 6831 model in particular has poor viewing angles.
  • Add a faster CPU. Most people are opting for the new Penryn based Intel Core 2 Duo T9×00 and T8×00 series. It isn’t clear if any of the upcoming quad core mobile CPUs are going to work in the 6831’s Socket P. My fingers are crossed.
  • Add another HDD in the vacant bay. Setup RAID 0 for even greater performance.

A great round up of these projects (with photos) can be found here.
