Long anticipated by folks who pay attention to these sorts of things, Asus’ G73 now has a baby brother. A stork delivered the G53 to Computex this past week.
Tragically, while it shares its big brother’s good looks it was delivered without the hoped-for RADEON Mobility 5850. It will use some as of yet un-named Nvidia part which is sure to kill battery life, cinge laps and cause ear drums to explode from extreme exposure to white noise.

About time I post some new reviews, eh?
Stay tuned.
One of the neat features of the Asus Republic of Gmaers notebooks is their little OLED screen. Using Asus’ software you can get it to display a limited amount of info – like CPU and memory load. Thankfully, community hackers have squeezed a lot more info from it using LCD Hype.

First you need LCDHype, get it here.
Second, you nee the driver for your OLED screen, G1 or G50/70/71. Extract the folder into the Program Files\LCDHype\Controller.
You need a monitoring program like Lavasys Everest or Motherboard Monitor install in order to feed values to LCDHype.
Then install the related plugin into Program Files\LCDHype\Plugins
Finally you need to get scripts that tell the software what to display, get them here and a mega thread here. Put scripts here, Program Files\LCDHype\Scripts.
Here it is: NCIX with MIR
It is still about $100-150 over priced.
The sub-$300 Wind at Staples is better.
Asus has a hot litle number that just popped up on www.bestbuy.com.
Very similar to the G50Vm-X1 that just came out a couple of months ago, this new model packs a GeForce 9800m GS. This is a lower clocked GTS – but on the plus side it has the same number of shader units and the same 256 bit memory. Good stuff!
What else do you get for $1,250?
My review of the VX3 is up.
It took some work for the boys at TR to get my submission up to their standards – it was a painful experience and then I got called away on business (the day job i.e. what keeps the family fed).
Writing for me is a classic ‘don’t quit your day job’ proposition. I love doing it, but it will always be a hobby. Treating it like real work makes it tedious and not worth doing. Armed with my new-found appreciation of the attention to detail required to be a pro, I think I’ll stick to being a part-time hack with a good paying day job.
My review of this fine little netbook is up. Please head on over to the Tech Report for the details.
Next up is the Asus Lamborghini VX3 and Gateway M-6864FX. Stay tuned!
I picked up a Gateway T-6321 a couple of days ago. When I complete the Asus VX3 review I will this latest Gateway. It’s amazing what kind of notebook you can buy with $599.
Thank you crazy FedEx man! Crazy? Why crazy?
Because he left a $3,000 notebook on my porch with no signature required. Lucky for me I rushed home from the office fast enough to beat any miscreants eyeing the juicy package.
And juicy it is! Without spoiling the fun of upcoming full review that I will be posting on the Tech Report, I can say that this is without question the sexiest and best presented premium branded notebook I have ever laid eyes on. Asus has not skimped one tiny bit on making this an authentic Lamborghini experience.
Time to wipe away the drool and begin evaluating this beauty.
