I recently came across this section of the Insanely Mac forums.
Resourceful hackers have managed to strip the Cider libraries from recent ports of PC games like Spore, Red Alert and Prince of Persia. This allows them to create community supported Mac ports of old games like Knight of the Old Republic, Jade Empire and Oblivion.
I’m not sure of the legality. Obviously, you have to own the PC version of the game in question – and you will need to copy the post PC-installation files over to your Mac. You’ll also need to apply a no-cd patch (unless you bought a digital version). Finally, you will need to create or find a Cider wrapper for the game.
Once you have done the work, the games run great. Framerates are smooth, and you can even multi task (Expose works fine with the games I have tried).
Maybe Cider should release a ‘Construction Set’ for consumers.
Ironically, the community version of Knight of the Old Republic works significantly better than the old Mac version.
