More On the Japanese MacBook Air Teardown

22 02 2008

I contacted Phil Keys – the North American correspondent for Tech-On! the pub that posted the article - to see if I could get an interview with the engineers who were quoted in the piece. It seemed to me, a bit of sour grapes. There are legit criticisms that the MacBook Air deserves, but questioning its design, and internal construction in particular suggests an agenda.

Having peered into dozens of notebooks, I have some sense of what to look for. The minimalism of the Air really strikes me. So to hear an engineer claim that it is full of waste makes no sense to me.

He has beat me to it, providing a little more context.

The critique still doesn’t make sense to me. Maybe we’ll get a chance to ask what they meant. Some of their remarks are frankly damning. Basically admitting to cutting corners as a design goal.
